Hello!
I’m Malcolm.

I use the pronouns “he, him, his,” and I’m a clinical social worker, a yoga and meditation instructor, and a San Franciscan.

Thanks for taking a minute to connect with me through my website.

I grew up in San Francisco—yes, there are actually people from here. As a teenager, I spent several years living in Massachusetts, France, and Minneapolis. I moved to Oregon for school and lived in Portland for eleven years before moving back to SF in 2014.

Meditation and yoga are essential components of my life, and I am both a student and a teacher of the subjects. I teach vinyasa and restorative yoga as an RYT-500, and my primary teachers are Jason Crandell and Judith Lasater. I teach many styles of meditation and concentration practice, and my teaching is grounded in my Sōtō Zen practice. I am an ordained Zen Buddhist lay priest, and my primary teacher is Rev. Keiryu Liên Shutt.

I tend to engage deeply with my interests, so I find I don’t have a ton of ‘hobbies.’ I love hiking and skiing, and you will often find me up in the mountains when I have some free time.

love working with my hands, creating or repairing things.
don’t eat meat.
like to read poetry, novels, and short stories.
enjoy the varied demands of small businesses ownership.

I

I believe a well-made pie is objectively better than any cake.

Yoga & Meditation

For information on my yoga and meditation offerings, please visit my yoga website.

In addition to teaching yoga and meditation, I am a clinical social worker. My clinical interests include working with trauma, veterans and military families, somatic and mindfulness-based techniques, and complex relationship and family dynamics. As a social worker, social justice is at the core of my profession; as a Buddhist, social justice is dharma work. Ending homelessness, fighting for trans rights, and smashing the patriarchy are causes near and dear to me. Consequently, some of my work focuses on creating social change within communities and organizations.

I've spent two decades in community health settings. In some roles, I worked with people experiencing homelessness, transgender individuals, former gang members, and other marginalized populations. In other roles, I worked primarily with providers—doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals—in large hospitals or integrated care facilities. I have worked in emergency rooms, community clinics, "mobile clinics" a.k.a. vans/RVs, and for years my consulting work had me traveling all over the country.

In every role,

I am a teacher.

This is a deep truth that I have learned about myself over the years, and I truly couldn’t be any other way. I am constantly learning a new skill or technique, sharing knowledge with people around me. I love public speaking, and I find satisfaction in creating coursework, reference documents, and lectures or presentations.

When we meet, you should ask me sometime about chocolates and confectionery class in culinary school, hiking the John Muir Trail or the Tour du Mont Blanc, or sleepwalking around an island in Puget Sound. All roads lead to great stories.

I'm glad for this chance to connect with you.

Thank you for taking this time to learn a bit about me.
Please get in touch if you think we could make or do something great for the benefit of others.

I look forward to hearing from you,
